Democratic Illinois treasurer candidate Robin Kelly received Mayor Sal Garza’s backing during a campaign stop Tuesday in Galesburg.
Garza said that, although the mayor’s position is non-partisan, he still thought it was important to seek out candidates who “are going to play the greatest role in bringing services to Galesburg.”

Experts say that makes the financial advice outlined at the annual Smart Women Smart Money conference at John A. Logan College Tuesday even more important.
The event - hosted by the State Treasurer's office - provided women with tips on achieving financial stability.

The event was part of a "Smart Women Smart Money" series of job fairs hosted by state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias' office. The fairs, in their 10th year, all feature financial literacy conferences and are designed to help women find jobs and better manage their money.

DWIGHT -- Low-interest loans provided by the state are now available for people in communities hit by Saturday's tornadoes, the state treasurer's office announced Tuesday.
Meanwhile, cleanup continued in Dwight, where officials said more than 100 homes were damaged, not counting the devastated mobile home park. Dwight was among a handful of Illinois communities ranging from Elmwood to St. Anne and south to Logan County affected by more than a dozen tornado touchdowns.

Gay and lesbian employees of the Illinois Treasurer's office with domestic partners will have the same benefits as married employees under an executive order signed by state treasurer and U.S. Senate candidate Alexi Giannoulias Sunday.
They'll get the same family and medical leave benefits, be able to take time off to have or adopt children and take bereavement time on par with married workers. That is in addition to health care benefits that same-sex partners already received.

The state of Illinois is offering relief to Streator tornado victims.
Elmwood —Residents, business owners and farmers in a swath of central Illinois — including Elmwood — hit by 15 confirmed tornadoes Saturday night are eligible for low-interest disaster recovery loans. Robin Kelly, chief of staff of the state treasurer’s office, made the announcement at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Elmwood Fire Department.

AURORA -- There are about 5,300 people in Aurora without bank accounts, people who rely on check-cashers and payday lenders for their financial transactions. A new initiative launched by State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias aims to change that.
Called Bank on Aurora, the program is the second in a series of statewide drives to connect as many people with checking and savings accounts as possible.
